Local Lambeth artist mORGANICo is creating a new public sculpture
Local Lambeth artist mORGANICo is creating a new public sculpture that is being carved from a 19-metre branch that fell from the 600-year-old oak tree near the café in Brockwell Park.
The work is being created thanks to a grant awarded by the Lambeth Wellbeing Fund and endorsed by Lambeth and Southwark Mind which has acted as a nurture organisation for the project.
Throughout the past 2 months, mORGANICo has been working with other artists and volunteers offering opportunities for people with mental health problems to learn wood carving skills by participating in free spoon carving workshops, and some have helped shape the main sculpture.
Sally, our grants fundraiser, recently visited the park to see the progress of this beautiful artwork. The design is emerging from the shape of the huge branch with images of the natural world including animals and plant life. These photos show how the work is progressing and we will let everyone know when it is completed.
The work is to commemorate all those that have died over the past year, either as a direct or indirect result of the pandemic; it will honour those we have lost to suicide and raise awareness of mental health issues.
