University of the Third Age (U3A) Norwood
Overview
The University of the Third Age (U3A) Norwood is a self-help, self-managed lifelong learning co-operative for older people who are no longer in full time work, usually over 50 years. They provide opportunities for their members to share learning experiences in a wide range of interest groups and to pursue learning not for qualifications, but for fun.
We are a small, and very friendly branch, with a wide variety of activities for you to get involved in. New Members will experience a hearty welcome. Because our branch is small, none of our activities is over-subscribed, so you will never have to go onto a waiting list to join one of our groups.
We hold our monthly General Meeting, at which we usually have a speaker, on the third Wednesday of each month. We meet at The Park Tavern at 56 Elder Road, SE27 9ND. This is on bus routes 432 and 417. Parking is available on nearby side roads. The meeting starts at 2.00pm, but members are encouraged to meet any time from 12.30 onwards for a chat and a drink.
In the spirit of U3A’s philosophy, all our groups are “self-help” in the sense that, apart from most of our monthly speakers at the General Meeting on the third Wednesday of each month, we do not get outside people in to facilitate our group activities. Instead, we draw on the skills of our members to provide leadership in the various groups. These leaders are merely facilitators, since all members of the group contribute towards its content. As retired people, we all bring with us a wealth of knowledge, skills and past experience, so by sharing it, we are able to facilitate one another’s continued learning. New members are always welcome to join any of our groups..
The Norwood Group covers West Norwood, Upper Norwood, and the neighbouring area.
Current activities include: art, bridge, French, creative writing, poetry & short stories, folk dancing and sequence dancing, garden, music apprecation, philosophy, science, theatre & cinema, badminton, crafts, discussion, foodies, scrabble, outings and walks.
