Surrey Docks Farm

Overview

Surrey Docks Farm is a working city farm in the heart of London. It occupies a beautiful 2.2 acre site on the south bank of the river Thames in Rotherhithe.  The farm is an ideal setting and environment for environmental activities throughout the calendar year. There is always something interesting to see at the farm, no matter what the season or weather.
The farm works with local communities and the people of Southwark to provide many unique opportunities for people to learn about farming, food production, and be actively involved in the ongoing working life of the farm.  Animals reared on the farm include a herd of goats, sheep, cattle, pigs, ducks, geese, chickens, turkeys, bees and donkeys. The herds, flocks and swarms are farmed with specific attention to animal welfare at all times.
There are a variety of green and horticultural attractions at Surrey Docks Farm. They have an orchard, herb garden, dye garden, vegetable plots, and the wildlife area. All horticulture areas of the farm double as educational space.
They hold daily projects for adults with learning disabilities on the farm.  Students have a wide range of project choice in the areas of farming, horticultural, retail, animal husbandry, food preparation and farm maintenance.  The farm runs progression and employment workshops alongside all projects.
Volunteering at the Farm is a fun and enjoyable way to learn new skills, meet people and contribute to the community.  Volunteers get involved with all aspects of the Farm; such as caring for our animals, putting their green fingers to the test in the gardens, serving customers in the farm shop or supporting staff to deliver our wide range of community and educational projects.
With a small staff team, volunteer supervision is very limited. They support and train volunteers in their roles, but ask that volunteers are capable of working independently. The minimum age for volunteering is 14 years old (with the exception of the Youth Role which is for 18+ only) and there is no upper age limit.
