Sporting Recovery

Overview

Sporting Recovery say that their innovative community-based exercise program is focused on people who are ‘marginal, high risk and hard to reach’ who often have concerning co-morbidity problems e.g. illicit drug and substance misuse, a diagnosis of mental health and/or offending behaviour. These adults have difficulties accessing, trusting and re-engaging with traditional services.

They run Wellness Clubs on Wednesday afternoons at a centre in Peckham, near Burgess Park.  Clubs include Football, Badminton, Basketball, Indoor Tennis, Table Tennis, Non-contact Boxing, a Gym, Yoga and Tai Chi and Qi Gong.  See the website for times of different sports.

They claim that exercise doesn’t just affect your physical health but has a positive effect on your mental health. The exercise you get from playing sports releases endorphins, or neurotransmitters in the brain that reduce pain and can induce a feeling of euphoria. This sensation, also known as a “runner’s high,” can help battle the symptoms of depression by providing the body with a natural, physical feeling of happiness.

Joining the programme is by referral only. Self referrals can be made via your GP or any multi-disciplinary teams, e.g. Community Psychiatric Nurses, OTs, Care Coordinators, Housing, Probation, and Drug & Alcohol agencies or Job Centre Plus.

How to Join:  If you would like to join or refer someone to our programmes please complete the online referral form. Alternatively, you can download the referral form and email it.  The referral form contains information, which will be required for any person who joins a Sporting Recovery exercise programme.

They ask clients to use their personal budgets if available. Donations are also welcomed.

There is also a Wellness Cafe serving healthy snacks.
