Smoking Cessation Services

Overview

Smoking Clinic – Maudsley Hospital
This is a specialist service, available to people living or working in Southwark.  You need to be referred to this service and the email for making referrals is: [email protected]
The tobacco dependence clinic provides support and treatment for people who want to stop smoking. The clinic is suitable for smokers with severe tobacco dependence, tobacco-related disease, and mental health issues, who are likely to require more intensive and specialist treatment, or who have made multiple attempts to quit.  Their technique, known as the Maudsley Model, has been identified as a model of good practice.
They offer behavioural treatments and an intensive group programme. All smokers are assessed for their suitability to use approved stop smoking pharmacotherapy (nicotine replacement therapy including – patches, lozenges, gum, nasal spray, inhalator, sublingual tablet), varenicline (champix) or bupropion (zyban), to help relieve nicotine withdrawal symptoms and cravings.  Successful quitters are also offered optional relapse prevention support for a year after they stop smoking.
Guy’s and St Thomas’ Stop Smoking Service
A free stop smoking service which aims to help people to give up smoking.  They provide advice, support and encouragement to help you stop smoking for good.
What they offer

  • trained advisers to help you decide when is the best time to stop and how to succeed
  • regular sessions in the first few weeks after stopping to encourage you to keep going
  • a choice of medications to suit your level of smoking and preference, available free or on prescription
  • carbon monoxide tests to keep you motivated by showing reduced carbon monoxide levels in your blood after quitting.

Hospital based stop smoking service.  Giving up smoking before any planned hospital treatment is the most effective thing you can do to speed up your recovery, even stopping smoking once you have been admitted can shorten your hospital stay.  At Guy’s and St Thomas’ they have a team of stop smoking advisers working with inpatients, outpatients and staff to provide excellent evidence-based support to smokers to help them quit.
Specialist community stop smoking services.  The Lambeth and Southwark community stop smoking service offers specialist support for people who may find it harder to stop smoking, particularly if you are house bound, have a long-term physical and or mental health condition or have tried to quit a number of times before.  Support can be provided on a one-to-one basis or if you feel you would benefit from the support of other smokers then stop smoking support groups may be your preferred option.
Pregnant women and new mums.  If you are pregnant or have children under the age of five, there is a specialist counselling service tailored to suit your specific needs.  They offer one-to-one support and can also support your partner and other family members who would like to stop smoking.
