Samaritans
Overview
The Samaritans Helpline offers confidential emotional support 24 hours a day, 7 days a week. The service helps you to talk through your concerns, worries and troubles. You don’t have to be suicidal to call. There is a network of local branches across the UK and callers are automatically diverted to their nearest available Samaritans branch. Calls are answered by trained volunteers. There are no age restrictions, young people can phone.
Alternatively you can contact the confidential email service (they will usually respond within 24 hours) or write to the address below.
Most local branches are open to people to visit and talk in confidence to volunteers.
In London there are the following local services:
Central London Samaritans, 46 Marshall Road, London W1F 9BF. Tel 116 123. Visiting 9am – 9pm every day.
The Samaritans of Lewisham, Greenwich & Southwark, 1-5 Angus Street, London SE14 6LU. 020 8692 5228. Please phone before visiting.
There are also services in Putney and Croydon (see website).
If you are worried about someone
If you can, first try to encourage them to contact Samaritans directly, as this will put them in more control of when and how they talk.
When Samaritans contact them, they can tell the person that you asked them to get in touch, or keep you anonymous if you prefer.
Samaritans won’t tell you anything the person you’re worried about shares with them, or whether they wanted our support. The only information we can share with you is whether or not they managed to reach them.
You can ask Samaritans to contact whoever you’re worried about by phone, email or letter and they will contact them in the way you suggest with the details you provide. If Samaritans calls and somebody else picks up, they won’t leave a message.
