Overview
Refuge opened the world’s first safe house for women and children escaping domestic violence in West London in 1971. Since then Refuge has led the campaign against domestic violence. They have grown to become the country’s largest single provider of specialist domestic violence services. On any given day they support more than 4,600 women, children and men.
Refuge supports people through a range of services, including refuges, independent advocacy, community outreach and culturally specific services. There are more details on the website.
There is a confidential national helpline offering counselling, support and welfare rights advice for women and children escaping domestic violence.
You can refer to one of Refuge’s network of safe houses and to Women’s Aid refuges across the UK. These can offer specialist support services, including provision for culturally specific refuges and outreach programmes for East European, African and Asian families.
For women in Lambeth there is the Gaia Centre offering support, information, advice or just a listening ear.
