NYAS – Youth Advocacy
Overview
NYAS, National Youth Advocacy Service, is a national children’s charity, based in Birkenhead, Merseyside.
NYAS provides advocacy and legal representation to children and vulnerable adults when important decisions are being made about them. The children and young people NYAS work with might be in care, have a disability or special needs, be subject to child protection plans, have mental health difficulties or their parents might be separating.
NYAS offers a variety of services including:
- A national advocacy helpline.
- Advocacy for children in care and those in need – including children subject to child protection plans, care leavers, children and young people with disabilities.
- The provision of independent visitors for children in care.
- Legal representation of children in private family law.
NYAS has a network of 350 independent advocates who provide advocacy to:
- Children in care or children who are subject to a child protection plan.
- Care leavers and care-experienced mothers.
- Children and young people who are in-patients in mental health settings.
- Children with disabilities.
- Independent Mental Health Advocacy (IMHA) to children, young people and adults detained under the Mental Health Act.
All of NYAS’ Independent Mental Health Advocates (IMHA) are specialist advocates who are trained to understand the needs of the patients. Our inpatient services provide an additional safeguard for patients who are subject to the Mental Health Act or who are admitted to inpatient mental health settings.
NYAS provides independent representation to children who are involved in private law proceedings. NYAS operates its own legal team which includes a Panel Member solicitor and a Family Law Panel member.
The NYAS National Helpline is a lifeline to many children and receives around 24,500 contacts a year. The Helpline offers advice and information as well as allocates independent advocates to around 10,000 cases created each year. This ensures NYAS can continue to provide the help these children need. The advocacy and support helpline opening hours are Monday to Friday, from 9am to 8pm.
