How we can help you

National Debtline is a debt advice charity run by the Money Advice Trust. They are a free and confidential debt advice service for people in England, Wales and Scotland. They have helped millions of people deal with their debts. Their team of expert debt advisers care about improving your situation and will help you to take control of your debts.

On their website, you will find all you need to get started on your debt-free journey. There are guides, fact sheets, budgeting tools and sample letters to help you write to your creditors. You can also get debt advice by using their web chat service, emailing us or calling the helpline.
The debt advisers come from a variety of different backgrounds. All of them are dedicated to helping you tackle your debts.

At National Debtline they are committed to answering your call and then discussing your debt problems with you and the options available to you. The specialist advice that they give over the telephone is backed up with written self-help materials which they can send out to you for free. If your circumstances meet certain criteria, they can, if you are interested, assist in setting up a Debt Management Plan or Debt Relief Order for you, for free. The website also includes the ability to set up your own debt management budget.

Issues dealt with the include county court, refusal of credit, benefits, bankruptcy, bank charges, harassment, housing and homelessness, and bailiffs. Free self-help information pack and a range of fact sheets are available.  Free step-by-step guidance on the website about how to deal with debt using the My Money Steps tool runs 24 hours a day.

When you phone an adviser:

To make sure they give you the best advice for your circumstances they need to know more about you.

  • They will ask you about your income and spending. You need to have this information to hand if you call. You might find it easier to complete the online budget before you call them.
  • They will also need details of who you owe money to and how much you owe them.
  • Their advisers will help you to work out what you can afford to pay towards your debt and help you to find the right debt solution.

You can download a leaflet entitled “How to deal with debt” and there is a lot of useful information on the website.
