Freedom from Torture
Overview
Freedom from Torture, formerly the Medical Foundation for the Care of Victims of Torture, has been working for more than 30 years to provide direct clinical services to survivors of torture who arrive in the UK, as well as striving to protect and promote their rights. Since its inception, over 50,000 individuals have been referred for help. Thanks to the dedication of staff and volunteers – as well as scores of passionate supporters and funders – thousands of torture survivors have been able to rebuild their lives in incredibly difficult circumstances.
Freedom from Torture provides rehabilitation facilities including counselling and activity groups as well as providing welfare advice. They also provide medical reports for enabling survivors of torture to secure safety in the UK and prevent being returned to further torture or possibly death. By working in close liaison with the UK Border Agency (UKBA), JobCentres, social services and local authorities, welfare advisors serve as powerful advocates for torture survivors.
Interpreting: It can be hard to explain torture and everything that has happened in a second language. They provide an interpreting service to people receiving therapy from them.
Activity groups: They provide a number of creative and group activities across their centres, including gardening, music, art, football and cooking. These activities have excellent health and social benefits for people who have fled torture and been forced to leave their friends and family behind.
About the South East centre
The London Centre is the largest of their five centres and is also where most of their non-clinical staff are located. Designed especially for the treatment of torture survivors. it was opened in 2004. The building is intended to be a safe and welcoming environment.

Medical Reports: Individual quotes based on hourly rates as per the recent changes of policy and practice by the Legal Aid Agency (LAA).
