Community Support Network South London (CSN) – Community Advocacy Service

Overview

Community Support Network South London (CSN) was formed in 1993, by a group of mental health service users in Lambeth, South London.  In 1996, it obtained funding for an advocate, who worked 28 hours a week at the local psychiatric hospitals. Now it provides in-patient, community and forensic advocacy services. Advocacy exists to empower and enable service users to have more say in their treatment and care and to exercise their rights.

Community Advocacy: 
This is provided to people who have recently been discharged from a section of the Mental Health Act 1983, as amended 2007.  The service priorities are people who are detained in the community on Community Treatment Orders, also known as Supervised Community Treatment.  All their advocacy services prioritise women, people who are new to advocacy or new to mental health services, those for whom English is not their first language and others with communication difficulties.   They work primarily around your care and treatment and rights under the Mental Health Act so if your issues are not these, it is likely they will refer you on to other services, for example specialist legal, benefits and housing advice services.  Ther community advocacy services are only available to Lambeth residents.

Access to interpreters on request. Target groups: People aged between 18 and 65 years accessing Independent Mental Health Advocacy under the Mental Health Act, and/or people accessing or wanting to access community mental health services. Referral/how to contact: Self referral. Referral via mental health professionals, carers etc accepted provided you agree. Led by people with experience of distress and of using mental health services.
