West London Mission

Overview

The Big House in Camberwell has 11 studio flats, providing supported accommodation to people who have been homeless. It specialises in supporting ex-servicemen from the British Armed Forces.  They work closely with a large number of ex-services organisations including SSAFA, Veterans Aid, Garden Leave, Stoll and the Poppy Factory amongst others.
Big House offers a calm and consistent environment for its residents, many of whom have had chaotic and difficult experiences.  They encourage residents to take personal responsibility as much as possible and make sustainable changes in their lives. There is also an emphasis on vocational guidance to help people into Work, Study, Training, new career paths and meaningful occupation.  They have a great success rate in seeing residents move on positively and we stay in touch with, and visit, many former residents.
The Haven is a Registered Care Home for 26 men with long-term alcohol dependency. Many of the residents have experience of street homelessness and sometimes prison.  Many have suffered from untreated illnesses and injuries, as well as the long term effects of poor diet and the mental health conditions associated with chronic alcoholism. Sometimes these things have been compounded by a lack of attention to hygiene and safety.
The Haven provides a stable environment and sympathetic support allowing them to make real positive steps in their health, their well-being and personal lives. The qualified staff team help residents to reconnect with their family and make positive links within the community. They help them recover their confidence within the friendly atmosphere within the Haven through activities, trips and holidays. Residents are encouraged to take steps to improve their diet, personal care and medical health.
