Age UK Lambeth

Overview

For 70 years Age UK has been supporting older people across the entire borough of Lambeth. They are a local independent charity who welcome anyone over the age of 55 to their services. They aim to support you in the second half of your life to make it as full, enjoyable and active as possible.

Age UK Lambeth offers a variety of services for older people living in Lambeth – see website, and they also organise an array of events and acitivites.

Vida’s, a drop-in, is located in the heart of Brixton off Windrush Square at  2B Saltoun Road, SW2 1EP, is fully accessible and has a hearing loop system. Its extensive programme offers a wide range of activities designed to help older people create and achieve goals for a happier life.  Vida’s is a community space where a number of MYsocial events are held. They have a cafe open every TuesdayWednesday and Friday from 10am until 4pm. They also provide a range of activities and support for older people there including – arts and crafts, baking, zumba, computer classes, lunch clubs, massage, seated exercise, tech workshops, yoga, sing-a-long and much more.  A regular ‘Out and About’ group visits London landmarks.  A ‘Yak and Yarn’ knitting group meets at the Hetherington Group Practice in Clapham, and a drawing class at Holland Grove Housing Scheme in Stockwell.

One of the ways we try to beat loneliness in later life is through our Befriending Service, where a volunteer visits an older person once a week in their own home.  The befriending service is for anyone in Lambeth who is a Disabled person, has long-term ill-health, lives with mental health issues, is an unpaid carer or is aged over 55.  Befriending provides a person with a valuable link to the outside world and often acts as a gateway to further support and social activity. They match each client with a suitable volunteer who visits them for one hour a week.

The handyperson service in Lambeth that is open to everyone. All work is guaranteed and completed by trained professionals. All the profits from the service go directly into supporting Age UK Lambeth’s work.  See website for prices for different types of work.  Prices are much lower for people over 55.  Website:  www.handyfix.org.uk   Tel. 020 7346 6806
